Breast Milk Storage Guidelines
Nursing mothers always worry if their babies will have an ample supply of food in case there is a sudden decrease of breast milk production. They are worried that if they experience low milk production, they have to supplement with formula. There are different ways to increase breast milk production so there is no point in losing sleep over it.
An easy way to increase breast milk production is to let the baby keep on feeding every time he or she wants to. They should be able to suckle all they want. The brain will instruct the mammary glands to keep on producing milk if it realizes that babies keep on feeding frequently.
You should consume a lot of liquids so there would be enough breast milk production. You need to consume extra liquid in a day to match the amount that the baby is drinking. Your diet should include enough protein and fat. You should be aware of your weight because if there is a sudden decrease, it may lead to a decline in breast milk production.
Rests as much as possible, even if you cannot sleep, try to be relaxed and calm. Relaxation and calmness can help increase breast milk production. Try also to keep on bonding with the baby, try holding the baby while he or she is sleeping, because through these bonding moments, it can increase oxytocin production.
Try offering both breasts during feeding. Let the baby find nourishment in one breast until he or she slows down before switching to another breast. Make sure that the baby latches on properly. The baby’s lips should be located on the areola part of the breast and beyond the nipple.
While resting after feeding, try to pump the breast for five to ten minutes for stimulation and this would help in increasing breast milk production. The aim of this exercise is to stimulate the breast to produce more milk.
Finally if you need additional assistance, contact a lactation specialist so they can help you with proper latching and feeding patterns.
